Abo Canyon Track Expansion Project
Project Location: Belen / Valencia County, New Mexico
Client: Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad
Synopsis of work:
This railroad expansion project included 5 miles of new second mainline track. It incorporated an aggressive schedule to build a second mainline in a rocky canyon with difficult access and some technical blasting areas adjacent to the existing live mainline.
Approximately 1,800,000 cubic yards of rock excavation was completed near the existing railroad tracks in 10 months. Five of the nine bridges constructed along the route were 102-foot steel girders. Two of the nine bridges were constructed using concrete girders and cast in place concrete decks.
