Working under an aggressive schedule, Ames built a dam around the upper reservoir of a pumped-storage hydroelectric generating plant in Georgia.

The embankment surrounding the upper reservoir included 10 million cubic yards of new fill and was designed as a dam with seven interior zones of filter and drain material to prevent saturation and failure. Each of the seven zones required that the rock and material be dealt with differently.

Ames’ equipment team modified Flow Boy trailers and fabricated spreader boxes that were attached to the front of a motor grader for accurate and efficient placement of the filter and drain material. This strategy minimized waste of these relatively expensive materials, exemplifying the innovation Ames team members bring to complex construction challenges.
