Ames Construction performed an intermodal facility expansion project that doubled BNSF’s lift capacity in the Memphis, Tennessee, market.

The project expanded the rail yard by adding a 190-acre site adjacent to the existing mainline rail. As the general contractor, Ames’ scope included earthwork, concrete and asphalt removal and crushing, pile and lagging retaining wall, cast-in-place retaining wall, duct bank, concrete subgrade stabilization, and the installation of more than 18 miles of pipe and box culverts.

The addition increased the facility’s capacity to efficiently transfer cargo containers between rail and truck, while also reducing emissions, improving air quality, and solidifying the city’s role as a transportation and distribution center.
